Harlan Brown

About

Harlan the Hobo

Harlan Brown is a 68-year-old American storyteller. Hoboing runs in his family. His grandfather Elmer rode the rails from 1931 to 1938 and left three notebooks. Harlan took to the road himself as a young man and spent the better part of fifty years out there. At the National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa, he sat with the last men alive who had ridden in the 1930s.

Fifty years on the road doesn't leave a man much of a pension. That is the plain reason for the channel, and for this book.

Harlan is a digital character: the face and voice on the channel are made with AI. The history is real. Every date, price, and practice in the book is checked against the genuine record — the Library of Congress, the WPA interviews, and the standard histories.
